Patrick Clement's small town: a pictorial look at 1940's rural America

Patrick Clement won an Honorable Mention Tabloid Witch in 2009 for The Eternal Pitfall of Prokofiev. He now sends news about his fundraising efforts for his new book. Clement writes:

"I am currently crowd funding my photo book project, small town: a pictorial look at 1940's rural America.

"This 80-page hardcover archival-quality photo book tells intimate stories of a southwestern Kansas ghost town through a collection of thought-to-be-lost family snapshots.

"In collaboration with the Kiowa County Historical Society and Museum, The Big Well Museum and The Kiowa County Signal Newspaper we will produce this limited edition, museum quality coffee table book just in time for the Holidays.

"While the people and places in the book are primarily from a small southwestern Kansas ghost town known as 'The Crescent Community,' they reflect the modest small town family lives of Americans during the Great Depression.

"We have pre-sold 100 copies to our local museums and we have create a crowd funding campaign through Kickstarter to raise the remaining funds needed to print the book.

"Kickstarter is the world's most prestigious crowd funding platform. It has been featured on news channels like Fox, CNN, ABC and NBC. It is a website that connects passionate, creative inventors and artists with supporters from all over the country.

"To date supporters have pledged more than $400 million to support their favorite projects.

"What is unique about Kickstarter is that projects MUST reach their goal to be funded. If projects do not reach their goal, they receive $0 and supporters are not charged. It is all-or-nothing. We have set a goal of $732. This will fund our remaining printing costs. For your pledge you can receive a selection of rewards including signed and hand-numbered books, original photos, limited edition prints, posters and more.

"If we reach our goal, not only will we fund the printing of our books, we will also donate a percentage of profits to local charities in Kiowa County, Kansas.

"Faye Hargadine, whose collection we are publishing, will donate 15% to a charity of her choice and I will donate 15% to a charity of my choice. I have chosen the Kiowa County Senior Center, an organization that provides meals, activities and legal and health services to Kiowa County seniors.

"The Kiowa County Senior Center just finished construction on their new building. The center was amongst the many buildings destroyed by the May 2007 EF5 tornado that hit Greensburg. The county seat of Kiowa County, Greensburg has been rebuilding after nearly 95% of the town was destroyed.

"The town, at the center of the county, has gained international acclaim for their sustainable and environmentally conscious building practices. I am proud to call Greensburg my home.

"I want to thank you in advance for helping me archive and protect this small, but significant sliver of Americana."

Maxim Magazine Honors Hell Is Full

Filmmaker Steve Hudgins, who won a Tabloid Witch Award in 2010 for his low-budget zombie film, Hell Is Full, reports that Maxim has named Hell Is Full as "One of the 66 Scariest, Goriest, Least Socially Redeeming Horror Films You've Never Seen." (No, it's okay -- that's intended as a compliment!)

Steve is so proud, he's sent us the cover from Maxim:

And also the article's title page:

And the listing for Hell Is Full:

But ... who hasn't seen those films? I've seen at least 12 of the films listed on just that page. (One of the film's title is obscured, so I can't be sure.) I especially love The House That Screamed (aka La residencia). Be sure to read my review of that film.

Shawna Baca to Direct a Music Video of Nadine Risha's "Sacred Stones"

Filmmaker Shawna Baca, who won a Tabloid Witch Award in 2007, is directing a music video for artist Nadine Risha. According to Baca:

"I am so excited to share with you a project I have been working on for Higher Conscious/World Peace artist, Nadine Risha, on her song titled, Sacred Stones. The song is a invocation for Hindu Deity, Lord Vishnu, who is the remover of all fear and obstacles. His symbol is a lotus flower, which is one of my favorite symbols.

"The song is beautifully sung in Sanskrit and Latin and has epic sounds like something you would hear on a movie soundtrack for Gladiator or Lord of the Rings.

"When I first heard the song, I was immediately compelled to direct this music video in a genre of music that you don't see many original videos done in. This was no small task as the song is almost eight minutes long, so we've had to launch a Kickstarter campaign to help finish the video.

"Please take a moment to visit our page and see if you feel compelled to join us in helping getting this video done or at least can help us spread the word. We have just a few days left and a little more to raise. Our minimum goal was 3k, but we need 6k to finish all the post production and get this video out there.

"We shot three days on a shoestring budget but what we are doing with as a passion of love and labor the arts is incredible. You will never know we did it with a tiny crew, small budget and all our friends helping us.

"Nadine has set some amazing awards for anyone who pledges and I know you will love her music as much as I do.

"See Sacred Stones on KickStarter".

Jose C. Gomez won an Honorable Mention Tabloid Witch Award in 2009 for his zombie feature, Bled White. In 2011 he released another horror feature, Plastic.

Now Gomez is now raising money for a new (non-horror) film -- Strawberry Summer.

In describing Strawberry Summer, Gomez says: "Fay is a quiet, introverted teenager. New in town, Fay has yet to make many friends. Fay tries to navigate through the divergent worlds of her disciplinarian, devout parents and the unrestricted lives of her peers, but feels alienated by both. When her parents' marriage begins to fall apart, Fay's feelings of isolation are heightened. She just wants a friend. Someone to listen, someone to love. Mike Flanagan to Expand Oculus to Feature Length

Mike Flanagan's short film, Oculus, won several Tabloid Witch Awards in 2006 -- Best Horror Short Film, Best Actor, Best Sound.

Flanagan returned to the Tabloid Witch in 2011 with Absentia, a feature film that swept the Tabloid Witch, winning Best Horror Feature Film, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Sound.

Now Flanagan revisits Oculus. In 2006 he told the Hollywood Investigator that he intended to someday expand Oculus into a feature, and with Absentia's success, that day is now.

Dave McNamara of Daily Variety reports:

FilmDistrict has acquired Intrepid Pictures' horror project "Oculus," to be directed by Mike Flanagan from a script he co-wrote with Jeff Howard.

Film, based on Flanagan's short of the same name, is produced and fully financed by Intrepid's Trevor Macy and Marc D. Evans with company's Anil Kurian executive producing.

International sales are being handled by Focus Features International at Cannes. Production is set for a late summer start.

Variety reported April 27 that Flanagan has come on board to direct, with production set for a late summer start. Intrepid and Focus previously collaborated on the international release of "The Strangers."

Steve Hudgins's Spirit Stalkers to Premiere June 16th

Steve Hudgins's first feature film submission to the Tabloid Witch Awards was The 3rd Floor. It was a rough production, yet it had a certain ... quality. It didn't win any Tabloid Witches, but it stuck in our memory. The film had passion and entertainment value, more so than most films we pass on. We liked it enough to give it a special screening at the 2009 Tabloid Witch Awards, two years after its submission. (Three other non-winning films also screened that year.)

In 2010, Hudgins's 5th entry -- Hell Is Full -- finally took home a Tabloid Witch (for Best Feature Film Screenplay). This made Steve very happy.

In 2011, Hudgins's 6th entry -- The Creepy Doll -- took home an Honorable Mention Tabloid Witch. The award went to the film's writer/director, PJ Woodside, Hudgins's creative partner at their Big Biting Pig Productions. Hudgins co-produced and acted in Woodside's film.

Now Hudgins's latest collaboration with Woodside, Spirit Stalkers, is set to premiere on June 16th, in Madisonville, Kentucky.

Hudgins says that Spirit Stalkers is "a mix between the modern popularity of paranormal investigative shows and the classic ghost stories that so many of us grew up with."

Rolfe Kanefsky's There's Nothing Out There to Screen on May 26th

In 2006, Rolfe Kanefsky's Nightmare Man won four Tabloid Witch Awards for Best Horror Feature Film, Best Actress (Blythe Metz), Best Supporting Actress (Tiffany Shepis), and Best Music Soundtrack (Christopher Farrell).

It should have come as no surprise that Kanefsky's film did so well, because was no newbie. Nightmare Man was his 11th feature film directorial effort. His debut film was 1990's There's Nothing Out There.

That film is now set for a special 10th anniversary screening in Los Angeles, at midnight, on May 26, 2012. According to Kanefsky's press release:

"There's Nothing Out There, the low-budget independent film, was directed by 20-year-old filmmaker Rolfe Kanefsky, who drive-in movie critic Joe Bob Briggs described as having 'invented the self-referential horror flick with There's Nothing Out There, (an idea copied by Kevin Williamson's screenplay for Scream several years later.'

"Produced in 1989 on a budget of $125,000, There's Nothing Out There told the traditional horror story of a group of high school kids who go to a cabin in the woods for spring break only to be terrorized by a 1950's style alien creature. However one of the kids has been every horror film and knows the warning signs and rules of the genre.”

Tabloid Witch Book Nominated for a Rondo Award

A book about awards may now win an award!

Tabloid Witch Awards founder Thomas M. Sipos's newest book, Horror Film Festivals and Awards, has been nominated for the 2012 Rondo Hatton Horror Classic Awards. The nomination is for their "Book of the Year" category.

Horror Film Festivals and Awards is a behind-the-scenes look at horror film festivals and the festival directors who manage them. Some two dozen horror film festival directors offer tips on how to do well at their events.

Naturally, a good portion of the book also relates the history of the Tabloid Witch Awards. So if you've ever wondered about the Tabloid Witch, this is the book for you. For that matter, if you've ever wondered about some of the other horror film festivals out there, this may also be the book for you.

Horror Film Festivals and Awards also includes a directory of over 200 horror film festivals, and a list of festival award winners from dozens of festivals over several decades.

The book is published by McFarland & Co, a leading supplier for the library and university market.

The Rondos are a fan award. Anyone can vote for the winners online.

Sipos's previous book, Horror Film Aesthetics, was nominated for a Rondo last year. It didn't win, but as they say about every award, "It's just an honor to be nominated!"

Erasmo Romero III -- Continued Success for a Great Artist

A late post, but still worth noting.

Last Christmas (nearly a month ago!), Erasmo Romero III sent out his latest graphic work, entitled "The Santa," to wish Merry Christmas to all his friends.

This beautiful work of "horror art" both demonstrates Romero's creative talents -- and why his Skin Deep won a Tabloid Witch Award for Best Short Comedic Horror Film in 2007.

Amazingly, Romero was a mere film student when he shot Skin Deep -- an undergraduate film student!

Despite the tough economy, and the exodus of film production from Los Angeles, Romero's portfolio, upon graduating film school, was so impressive that he soon found employment in San Diego at Legend 3D.

The Tabloid Witch Awards is proud to have provided the premiere screening for Skin Deep.

In case you haven't seen it, here it is again:

And here is Erasmo Romero III in 2007, which his Tabloid Witch Award for the above film.

Skin Deep also won Tabloid Witches for Best Actor (James Rollyson) and Best Music Soundtrack (Joseph Y. Kamiya).
